More accurate measurement of miniature test specimens

Test methodologies using miniature bodies to obtain mechanical properties are a trend in recent years in many areas of technology, such as energy for evaluating the residual life of operating components or 3D printing of metallic materials, where it is possible to obtain local properties of functionally graduated materials.

To obtain reliable results comparable to standard testing, precise technological procedures must be used, from production to testing. One of the important links in this chain is the measurement of the initial dimensions of miniature test specimens. For this purpose, a new digital magnifier was purchased with an optical unit with a magnification ratio of 12: 1 and a camera with a resolution of 5 MPx.

The device allows you to control the light intensity and compatible NIS-Element D software allows the use of advanced image measurement and filtering functions. The device also has an extended depth of field, which is suitable for focusing fractures after the test, which are characterized by a considerable topology.
